DSA: Histo: Nasal cavity, larynx, pharynx Flashcards

1
Q

what makes up conducting portion?

A

respiratory epithelium (ciliated pseudostrat. columnar epithelium w/ goblet cells)

  • glands are located in lamina propria
  • contains smooth m.

Q

what makes up vestibular portion of nasal cavity?

A
  • stratified squamous keratinzed epithelium w/ hair follcles

- gradually changes to resp. epithelium (ciliated pseudostratified columnar with goblet cells)

Q

makes up respiratory portion of nasal cavity?

A
  • thick BM

- layer of CT below BM called “lamina propria” which contains mucous glands, plexus of vv

Q

olfactory region of nose?

A

located in resp. portion of nasal cavity
- covered w/ olf. epithelium (pseudostrat. columnar w/ goblet cells)

  • in subepithelium are tubulo-alveolar glands of Bowman that secrete fluids on surface to trap odorous substances

Q

what cells are in olfactory region?

A

bipolar neurons (olfactory cells) - axons project through cribiform plate to olfactory bulbs to synapse.

sustentacular cells = supporting cells

basal cells = regenerative cells

Q

nasopharynx

A

proximal most portion (nasal region) lined with resp. epithelium

distal portion (oral region) lined with strat. sq. non-keritonized epi ad continuous with oropharynx

Q

auditory ube

A

eustacian tube is lined with resp epithelium (w/ numerous goblet cells)
- connected to middle ear and nasopharynx, allows for equalization of pressure b/w tympanic cavity and external auditory meatus

Q

epiglottis of larynx: two surfaces?

A

“lid” of larynx

  • elastic cartilage with mixed seromucous glands present
    1. ant surface = stratified squamous non-keratinized (w/ taste buds)
    2. post surface = respiratory epithelium
