- HCO3- is greater than 24
2. CO2 is less than 40
What qualifies a metabolic acidosis respiratory compensation?
CO2 less than 40
What qualifies a metabolic alkalosis respiratory compensation?
CO2 greater than 40
What qualifies a respiratory alkalosis renal compensation?
HCO3- less than 24
What qualifies a respiratory acidosis renal compensation?
HCO3- greater than 24
Equation for metabolic acidosis
PaCO2 = 1.5[HCO3-] + 8 (+/-2)
*anion gap= [Na} - ([Cl] + [HCO3])
Equation for metabolic alkalosis
PaCO2 = (.5 to 1.0) x change in HCO3
Equation for respiratory acidosis
- Acute: HCO3 = 24 + ((PaCO2 -40) / 10)
2. Chronic: HCO3 = 24 + 4 ((PaCO2 -40) / 10)
Equation for respiratory alkalosis
- Acute: HCO3 = 24 - 2 ((40 - PaCO2) / 10)
2. Chronic: HCO3 = 24 - 5 ((40 - PaCO2) / 10)
