Druids- Education Flashcards
Druides a bello abesse solent neque tributa una cum reliquis pendunt; militiae vacationem omniumque rerum immunitatem habent.
The Druids are usually exempt from war and neither do they pay tributes together with the rest; they have exemption from military service and exemption from all (other) responsibilities.
tantis praemiis excitati et sua sponte multi in disciplinam conveniunt et a parentibus propinquisque mittuntur.
They are driven on by such great rewards and many gather of their own accord for training and (many) are sent by parents and relations.
magnum ibi numerum versuum ediscere dicuntur; itaque nonnulli viginto annos in disciplina permanent. neque fas esse existimant hos versus litteris mandare, cum in reliquis fere rebus Graecis litteris utantur.
They are said to learn by heart a large number of verses there; and so some remain in training for 20 years. And they don’t think it right to entrust these verses to writing, although in nearly all the rest od their affairs they use Greek writing.
id mihi duabus de causis instituisse videntur, quod neque in vulgum disciplinam efferri velint, neque eos, qui discunt, litteris confisos minus memoriae studere.
They seem to me to have established this for two reasons, as they neither want their rule of life to be spread to the general public, nor do they want those who are learning relying on writing to pay less attention to memory.
in primis hoc volunt persuadere, animas non perire, sed ab aliis post mortem transire ad alios, atque hoc maxime homines ad virtutem excitari putant metu mortis neglecto.
They especially want to persuade (people) of this, that souls do not die, but transfer from one to another after death, and by means of this (belief) especially, they think that men are moved to courage, with the fear of death disregarded.
multa praeterea de sideribus atque eorum motu, de mundi ac terrarum magnitudine, de rerum natura, de deorum immortalium vi ac potestate disputant et iuventuti tradunt.
They discuss many (other) things besides this, about the stars and their motion, about the Universe and size of the Earth, about the nature of things, about the might and power of the immortal Gods, and they hand it all down to their young people.
