Schizophrenia
Thought disorder where patients have difficulty perceiving reality
Example: hearing voices, seeing people, or things that are aren’t there
Etiology
The cause of the disease
Concordance
If one twin has the disease, what is the likelihood that the other twin will also have the disease
50-80%
How is schizophrenia caused by the environment?
Maternal infections and maternal starvation are both associated with an increased risk of the baby developing schizophrenia
Chlorpromazine
First antipsychotic drug
What are the features of all antipsychotic drugs?
Block D2 dopamine receptors
1- Typical antipsychotics
Chlorpromzine
Haloperidol
Blockade of the D2 receptors
Adverse effects of typical antipsychotics
Motor Impairment such as Parkinson’s disease
Slow movement and Rigid movement
Causes anhedonia (lack of pleasure)
Alter productive hormones
Prolactin: when women are breastfeeding to promote breast tissue differentiation and milk production are increased
2- Atypical antipsychotics
Clozapine and Atypical
Blocks more of the Serotonin receptors
Clozapine
Most effective treatment for schizophrenia, but it is rarely given as the first drug because it can cause a fatal loss of white blood cells
Fatal side effect of white blood cell loss
Side effects of atypical antipsychotics?
Don’t have the motor side effects
Causes metabolic syndrome (because of weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease)
Weight gain reduces compliance and increases the risk of co-morbidities
