Explain the dangers of using drugs that have not been thoroughly tested (4)
1-Thalidomide was developed as a sleeping pill
2-doctors realised it could control morning sickness in pregnant women
3-It wasn’t tested on pregnant women though
4-Babies were born with limb abnormalities as a result of their mothers taking thalidomide
Explain the main stages in testing drugs (4)
1) science labs on cells and tissues or organs.
2) animals
3) healthy human volunteers
4) patients?
What is a placebo?
A substance used in clinical trials which does not contain any drug at all
Explain why a placebo is used in drug trials
To check that the drug being tested really does have an effect on the patient
What do statins do?
Statins lower blood cholesterol levels and are lowering the amount of heart diseases and stokes. But they are not stopping people having a bad diet
Explain how and why double blind trials are used
A trial where neither the doctor nor patient knows who is given a drug to test whether the drug is effective or nah
What is a drug?
A chemical which causes changes in the body.
MEDICINAL- cure disease or relieve symptoms.?
RECREATIONAL- alter the state of your mind and/or body?
What is addiction?
When the body’s chemistry changes your body can become addicted. Affect the nervous system, particularly the brain
Problems caused by drugs (4)
Addictive and illegal. Some drugs lead to harder drugs. If you try to stop you will get withdrawal symptoms

Why do people use recreational drugs?
For Pleasure
What is an effect of cannabis?
It can lead to worse drugs! It is a gateway drug
Describe and explain the reasons for testing new drugs (4)
To find out if they work, if they are toxic, to find the best dose, for side effects
Describe how some recreational drugs are worse than others
They can cause diseases such as cancer, have affects on heart and circulatory system
