To gain a physical advantage
Drugs are easy to come by and they think everyone is doing it

Many of them and new ones are being made & developed all the time
What are Social Drugs ?
These are socially acceptable substances (alcohol & tobacco) as well as illegal drugs (cocaine & cannabis) .

Drugs that athletes specifically take to improve their chances of winning
What are Stimulants ?
Stimulate the circulatory & nervous system which speeds up reactions
Can work harder without feeling pain & fatigue
What are Narcotic Analgesics ?
Painkillers that help athletes compete or train even if they are injured
What are Anabolic Steroids ?
Hormones that help repair muscle & bone
Used to increase the size & strength of the muscles
What are Diuretics ?
Increase the amount of water excreted in urine
Athletes use them to lose weight & to flush out banned substances
What are Beta blockers & Tranquilizers ?
Help to relax & reduce anxiety
What are Peptide Harmones, Mimetics & Analogues ?
Increase size & strength of muscles
Increase the red blood cell count
Repair damaged tissue
What is Blood Doping ?
Injecting more of your blood into your body before competition
Your body will be more efficient at carrying oxygen
When was The World Anti-Doping Agency Established & Why ?
1999 . It was to combat drugs in sports through education, strong leadership & scientific research
What is the WADO’s aim ?
To work towards a vision where all sports are doping free
