Cell Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration ?
Breathing in & out
What does respiration do ?
Supplies oxygen to the body’s cells & take away poisonous by-product (carbon dioxide)
What is Cell Respiration ?
Different body cells have different respirations & it is called Cell Respiration
What is movement caused by & what does it need ?
Muscle Contracting which needs Energy
What does your muscles obtain energy from ?
Food
What makes up food ?
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Fats
Vitamins
Minerals
Fibre
What is the break down of food called ?
Digestion
What does your body use for Energy ?
Carbohydrates & Fats
How is Carbohydrates digested & where is it stored ?
- Starch is a string of glucose molecules joined together
- Enzymes in the gut break down the starch into glucose
- The glucose passes to your blood stream through the walls of the gut
It is stored :
Liver as ‘glycogen’ - released when the level of glucose in the blood becomes low
Muscles as ‘glycogen’ - changed back to glucose during execise
The rest of glucose is carried in the blood to other cells
What is the difference between Aerobic & Anaerobic Respiration ?
Aerobic Respiration is the production of energy using oxygen.
Anaerobic Respiration is the production of energy WITHOUT using oxygen .
How does Aerobic Respiration work ?
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Glucose from carbohydrates
+ Oxygen from respiration are needed
——->
When you breath out Carbon Dioxide is produced
+ You sweat therefore producing Water
+ You use up Energy
What is Aerobic Respiration used for ?
Produces heat therefore warming the body
Used for muscle contraction providing movement
What are the advantages of Aerobic Respiration ?
A lot of glucose is stored so it can supply energy for long periods of time
There is no dangerous by-products
What are the disadvantages of Aerobic Respiration ?
Take 90 seconds for the Aerobic system to fully work
Activities require maximum effort
We cannot use this system because it takes up time for the oxygen to reach the muscles when we need it in a short space of time
What is Anaerobic Respiration used for ?
Oxygen cannot reach the muscles fast enough during maximum effort therefore we use Anaerobic Respiration
