Reduce the amount of acid produced by parietal cells

irreversibly blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme or the gastric proton pump

What effect can prolonged use of PPIs have?

Can result in high levels of gastrin when you stop taking them meaning the patient may get some reflux symptoms.
