Drugs Flashcards
Amoxicillin
Aminopenicillin
Good oral bioavailability
Longer half life than penicillin
Amoxicillin use
Gram -ve bacteria
S. pyogenes
Pneumococcal infection (resp)
Coliform infections (urinary infection)
Amoxicillin mechanism action
Inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis
Amoxicillin adverse reactions
Damage to commensal microflora
Allergy
Amoxicillin interactions
Can increase levels of protein bound drugs
Clarythromycin
Macrolide
Used for penicillin allergy
s. pyognes infecitions
Coliform
Clarythromycin mechanism
Inhibit protein synthesis of bacterial ribosomes (50S)
Clarythromycin adverse effect
Nausea and diarrhoea
Alter cardiac conduction
Clarythromycin interactions
Inhibit enzymes (cytochrome p450) involved in metabolism of other drugs
Vancomycin
Glycopeptide
Only active against Gram +ve bacteria
Active against many resistant strains
Vancomycin mechanism
Inhibit bacterial cell wall (peptidoglycan) formation by different target to beta lactams
Vancomycin adverse effects
Nephrotoxic
Ototoxic
