Penicillins
Target late step in cell wall synthesis (transpeptidase)
Natural: Pen G (increase t1/2, treponema tx: syphillis)
Anti-staph: nafcillin (naf for staph, MSSA)
Amino: amoxixillin (broad spectrum, Gram + and some gram -)
Anti-pseudomonal: pipericillin (very broad, pseudomonas and many other Gram -)
Cephalosporins
1st gen: Cephalexin (PHIRST) (mild rash)
2nd gen: Cefaclor (2 C’s) (good for anaerobes… bacteroides and clostridium)
3rd gen: Cefotaxime(meningitis), Ceftriaxone (don’t try axing neonates) (TRI-AX) (tx: gonorrhea)
4th gen: Cefepime (VERY broad) (hospital acquired infections) (resistant to B-lactamase)
5th gen: Ceftaroline (tx: MRSA) (resistant to B-lactamase)
Carbapenems
Imipinem + Cilastatin= VERY BROAD
Cilastatin moa: dihydropeptidase inhibitor
SE: seizures if you dont adjust in kidney failure
Monobactams
Aztreonam (diff structure)
