Thorazine, Risperdal, Zyprexa

A

What it’s used for: Schizophrenia
How it works: Blocking dopamine receptors; dampening responsiveness to irrelevant stimuli (schizophrenia may be linked to overactive dopamine systems)
Side Effects: Sluggishness, tremors, twitches, and tardive dyskinesia

Antidepressant

Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac

A

What it’s used for: Depression, anxiety, strokes
How it works: Increases ability of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine. Also blocking reabsorption and removal of serotonin from synapses
Side Effects: Dry mouth, weight gain, hypertension, dizzy spells
