What are drugs?
A drug is any substance which when taken into the body can alter its function.
Give some examples of illegal drugs.

What are the three main types of drugs catorgorised by their function?
Stimulants
Depressants
Hallucinogens

What do stimulants do?
Speed up activity in the brain.
What do depressants do?
Slow down activity in the brain and the nervous system.
What do hallucinogens do?
Affect all the senses, altering people’s perceptions and causing hallucinations.
Give some examples of each type.
Stimulants- caffeine, cocaine, nicotine, ecstasy, amphetamines
Depressants- alcohol, cannabis, tranquillisers, methadone, codeine, heroin, morphine.
Hallucinogens- LSD, magic mushrooms (psilocybin), PCP, mescaline and high doses of cannabis and ecstasy.
Name some problems in our society related to drug use.
1 in every 5 deaths are drug related.
96% of all drug related deaths are the result of alcohol.
76% of 14 years and older have recently used alcohol.
Give some reasons why people will use drugs.
Medical reasons, enhancing sport performance, social reasons, peer influence, boredom (taking a drug for something to do), rebellion (to go against the wishes of parents or guardians), escape (to escape from a stressful situation), risk-taking.
The effects of drugs will vary from person to person, depending on-
How much is taken, how it is taken, the person’s size, weight and health, the social setting, the person’s experience with the drug, person’s mood, whether or not it was taken with other drugs.
