Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Benzodiazepines
A
- Sedative Hypnotic
- Use for sleep, anxiety, or both
- Boosting GABA
- “Pam” endings
- Antianxiety: Increase inhibition in the spinal cord to produce skeletal muscle relaxation
2
Q
Barbiturates
A
- Sedative Hypnotic
- CNS depressants
- Addictive
- Barbital
3
Q
Pharmacokinetics of Sedative-Hypnotic Drugs
A
- Highly lipid soluble
- Administered orally
- Uniform distribution
4
Q
Buspirone
A
- Serotonin agonist
- Stimulate serotonin in certain areas of the brain
5
Q
SNRIs
A
- Good for chronic pain, osteoarthritis, peripheral neuropathies, and fibromyalgia
6
Q
Tricyclics
A
- affect all 3 primary amines (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine)
- Major problem is sedation
- Significant anticholinergic effect
7
Q
MAO inhibitors
A
- can be dangerous if taken with food that contains tyramine
- Side effects: CNS excitation, anticholinergic effects, increased blood pressure
8
Q
Trazodone
A
- “off label” for insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain
9
Q
Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
A
- primarily as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor
10
Q
Lithium
A
- Mood stabilizer to help reduce the mood swings
- Absorbed in the GI tract, eliminated in urine
- Accumulation is a big problem
11
Q
Tardive dyskinesia
A
- can lead to dysphagia
- May be irreversible
- May be caused by “disuse supersensitivity” of the dopamine receptor
12
Q
Psuedoparkinsonism
A
- Block dopamine receptors
- Symptoms: Resting Tremor, Bradykinesia, Rigidity
13
Q
Akathisia
A
- can use a beta blocker
14
Q
Metabolic effects of Antipsychotics
A
- weight gain
- increased plasma lipids
- diabetes
15
Q
Antipsychotic Drugs
A
- Orthostatic Hypotension
