1
Q
how does skin protect the human body?
A
- protective layer, consists of dead cells
- difficult for pathogens to penetrate
- sebum/oil kills bacteria
2
Q
how does cilia protect the human body?
A
- waft pathogens to mouth to cough out
- or stomach to be digested/destroyed by stomach acid
3
Q
how does stomach acid protect the human body?
A
PH1 kills most ingested pathogens
4
Q
how does tear glands protect the human body?
A
- antimicrobial properties in tears
5
Q
how does the nose protect human body?
A
- nasal hairs and sticky mucus and cilia prevent pathogens entering nostrils
6
Q
how does the trachea/bronchus protect the human body?
A
- lined with mucus to trap dust and pathogens, cilia move the mucus up to be swallowed
7
Q
what do phagocytes do?
A
- engulf and destroy pathogens
8
Q
what do lymphocytes do?
A
- memory cells
- make specific antibodies to attach to and destroy antigen on pathogen
- release antitoxins, neutralise toxins from bacteria
