Drugs Flashcards
What is are ACEIs?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.
- Relax veins and arteries to lower BP
- Stop the production of angiotensin II - substance that narrows blood vessels causing increase of BP
What are examples of ACEIs?
Lisinopril, ramipril, enalapril
What are the other drugs types that can be prescribed with ACEIs?
Diuretics and CCBs
What are the side effects of ACEIs?
Dry cough, hyperkalemia, dizziness, headaches and sometimes angioedema
What are ARBs?
Angiotensin II receptor blockers
- Relax veins and arteries to lower BP
What are examples of ARBs?
Losartan, candesartan, Irbesartan
What are the side effects of ARBs?
dizziness, hyperkalemia, angioedema
What are Calcium channel blockers?
- Prevent calcium from entering the cells of the heart and arteries - calcium causes the heart/ arteries to contract strongly.
- CCBs allow blood vessels to relax and open
- Some CCBs can also decrease the HR
what are CCBs commonly used in?
patients who have angina and arrhytmia
what are examples of CBBs?
amlodipine, nifedipine, verapamil, felodipine and diltiazem
what are the side effects of CBBs?
Headaches, nausea, swelling of feet and lower legs, dizziness and flushing
What are Beta blockers?
- Block effects of epinephrine aka adrenaline
- Cause the heart to beat slowly and with less force
- Help widen veins and arteries to improve Blood flow
What are examples of beta blockers?
Atenolol, bisoprolol, propranolol and nadolol
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
- Cold hands and feet
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
