what are antipsychotics?

are known as neuroleptics are medications that are used to control psychosis, such as delusions and hallucinations
- taken in pill form or injected

what are TYPICAL anti-psychotics?

- example = chlorpromazine
- dopamine antagonist = reduce dopamine activity by blocking dopamine receptors at the synapse
- calms the dopamine system in the brain = reducing positive systems

what are the side effects of TYPICAL anti-psychotics?

- dry mouth
- constipation
- uncontrollable muscle movement

what are ATYPICAL anti-psychotics?
A
- example = clozapine
- block dopamine receptors but also act on other neurotransmitters
- reduces both positive/negative symptoms

- weight gain
- cardiovascular problems
- however, are less likely to cause involuntary movement side effects
