What are the major side effects of lithium?

A

Gi distress
Hypothyroid
Reduces seizure threshold
Polyuria/polydipsia due to ADH antagonism. More severely causes Interstitial renal fibrosis –> renal failure

A

Mania prophylaxis, but not as good for depression

However its better tolerated than lithium

Mixed episodes
Rapid cycling (4 or more episodes a yr)

Rash which can progress to TEN or SJS

A

Titrate up very slowly over ~8wks, this massively reduces incidence of rash and TEN/SJS
