Drug Recognition Flashcards
Identify the primary narcotic substances with the depressant classification of abused drugs
Morphine - principle alkaloid of opium Codeine Heroin - does not naturally occur in opium. Most abused narcotic Dilaudid Oxycodone Demerol and methadone
Identify the three pharmacological classifications of drug abuse
Depressants - slow down activity of CNS. May relieve pain, induce sleep, relieve anxiety, produce dependency
Stimulants - stimulate the CNS.
Hallucinogens - Acute anxiety, restlessness, and sleeplessness common effects. Marijuana, peyote, PCP, LSD
Identify the primary non-narcotic substances with the depressant classification of abused drugs
Barbiturates - abuse is similar to alcohol abuse. Abuser appears drunk without the odor of alcohol on their breath.
Minor tranquilizers
Alcohol
Identify two categories within the stimulant family of drugs of abuse: cocaine and amphetamine type compounds
Cocaine HCL - water soluble. I jetted or snorted, cannot be smoked
Freebase - use of flammable solvents such as ether
Crack - use kitchen chemicals, simple and safe. Resulting chunks can be smoked
Amphetamine - has calming effect on children suffering from ADD. Increased energy levels, level of super irritating, decreased depression and diet aid
Identify five drugs within the hallucinogenic family of drug abuse.
Marijuana - distorted perception and loss of contact with reality
Peyote - primary ingredient in peyote is mescaline. Produces illusions/hallucinations lasting from 5-12 hours
Psilocybin mushrooms - affect mood and perception in a manner similar to mescaline and LSD
LSD -
PCP
