Red phosphorous or Hydridodic Acid Method - ephedrine or pseudophedrine is precursor. Red phosphorous/iodine or hydridodic acid
Nazi or Birch method - ephedrine/pseudophedrine used as precursor. Lithium metal/anhydrous ammonia used
Identify the types of clandestine labs, characteristics of people operating the labs, and the regions of the country in which labs are common
Labs for methamphetamine, amphetamine, LSD, MDMA, GHB, PCP
Found in rural agricultural regions. Labs also operated in single and multifamily residences in urban and suburban neighborhoods.
Lower middle class whites, 19-40 with no training in chemistry.
Identify common hazards associated with clandestine lab
People - often armed, if user likely to be agitated, explosions/fire, toxins
Location - confined spaces, rigged electrical apparatus, chemicals,
Haz Mat - phosphine gas, red phosphorus, iodine, anhydrous ammonia
Identify steps taken when clandestine lab is discovered
Recognize a clandestine lab. Implement actions to protect self and public, secure scene and call for qualified help.
