Drug-Mineral-Organ Effects Flashcards
Metoclopramide
Increases GI motility, decreases food absorption
Opioids, anticholinergic
Decreases GI motility, can lead to constipation (RED FLAG WARNING)
Diuretics (thiazides, corticosteroids)
Can deplete K+
Laxatives
May deplete K+
Cortisol, aldosterone, deoxycorticosterone
Causes marked sodium and water retention
Sulfonylureas and lithium
Impairs thyroid uptake and release of iodine (causes thyroid problems)
Oral contraceptives
Lowers zinc levels
Increases copper levels
Certain Antibiotics (tetracyclines)
Reduces iron absorption from food
Ethanol
Impairs thiamin, niacin, pyridoxine (B vitamins)
Ethanol and oral contraceptives
Inhibits folate absorption
Phenytoin, primidone
Causes folate (folic acid/ B9) deficiency
Folate vitamins
Makes phenytoin less effective
Anticonvulsants
Can cause vitamin D deficiency
Ethanol, oral contraceptives, aminosalicyclic acid, slow-release potassium iodide, colchicine, trifluoperazine,
Interfere with absorption of B12
OCPs with a high progestin dose
Can cause depression (probably because of metabolically induced tryptophan deficiency)
