Drug keyword definitions Flashcards
Bio-availability
The amount of unchanged drug from the original dose which reaches the systemic circulation.
Buccal
Deposited under the lip
Sublingual
Deposited under the tongue
Oral
Drug is swallowed
Rectal
Supppository up the bum
Sustained release preparation
Sustained-release dosage forms are dosage forms designed to release (liberate) a drug at a predetermined rate in order to maintain a constant drug concentration for a specific period of time with minimum side effects
Solution
A solution is a mixture of ions or molecules (very, very small)
Suspension
A suspension has bigger particle sizes and so it may look cloudy or murky
Enteric coated tablets
Enteric coating delays disintegration of the tablet until it reaches the small intestine
Phase 1 metabolism
Involves reactions such as oxidation, reduction and hydrolysis and results in division of the parent drug into active or inactive metabolites
Prodrug
Inactive parent drug
Phase 2 Metabolism
Involves conjugation reactions which aim to add functional groups to metabolites in order to increase their polarity and therefore, their solubility and excretion.
CYTP450
Superfamily of oxidases
