Drug Development and Monoclonal Antibodies Year 9 Flashcards
What were drugs traditionally extracted from?
Plants and microorganisms
Why do plants produce chemicals?
Predator protection, rid microorganisms that can cause disease, attract organisms for pollution
What is menthol?
Mint-produced drug, toxic to many microbes and insects
What is allicin?
Garlic-produced drug, interferes with lipid synthesis
What is aspirin?
Painkiller derived from willow
What is digitalis?
Heart drug produced by foxgloves
How are the majority of new drugs synthesised?
They are synthesised by chemists in pharmaceutical industry
What must happen to new medical drugs before they are used?
They must be extensively trialled and tested
What are they tested for?
Toxicity, efficacy and dosage
What is toxicity?
If substance is poisonous
What is efficacy?
Drug’s ability to cure condition or relieve symptoms
What is dosage?
Most effective drug amount needed to cure condition
What are the 3 main stages of testing?
Preclinical drug trials, Animal trials, Human clinical trials
What is a preclinical drug trial?
Drugs tested in lab by computer models and grown human cells
What is an animal trial?
Drugs tested on animals, known amount given then animal is monitored
What is a human clinical trial?
Drug tested on health volunteers, dosage built up, then ill are tested
Why are healthy volunteers selected first in human clinical trials?
Side effects could sick more harm, medicine of the sick could interact with drug, if treatment doesn’t work it would be unfair to use sick people
What are double blind trials?
Part of human clinical trials, doctors give patients placebos at random
What is a placebo?
Substance resembling drug but has no side effects, only made up of sugar
What is the placebo effect?
Patient has placebo but thinks it is drug and expects it to work, so reports feeling well despite not actually feeling well
Why do double blind trials happen?
To avoid bias from doctors, placebo effect and psychological effects on doctors
What is a peer review?
Before drug’s published, other scientists check trial’s results to prevent false claims and bias
What are monoclonal antibodies?
Antibodies produced from single clone of cells, are specific to one binding site on one protein or antigen
What produces monoclonal antibodies?
Stimulation of mouse lymphocytes
