Drug Computation Flashcards
etiology of POSOLOGY
Greek, “posos” how much; “logia” study of
It is used in calculating appropriate dosage based on factors
such as weight and body surface area or for patients with
organ dysfunction needing dose modifications to prevent
toxicity or disease progression
POSOLOGY
Also includes computation of doses based on specific
conditions such as antimicrobial doses for septic patients or
insulin scaling for sensitive diabetic patients
POSOLOGY
POSOLOGY may be based on
-antimicrobial doses (septic patients)
-insulin (sensitve diabetes patients)
-wegiht
-body surface area
In bioethics, it is not ethical to conduct a clinical trial with
pediatric subjects unless the trial is already in phase ________ or _________
phase 3 or 4
Regulated according to the age or weight, a fraction of the
adult dose being given
PEDIATRIC DOSING
For children 2 years and (>) above
YOUNG’S RULE
Most used/popular/safe; with no limitation, it can be used for
patients below or above 2 years old, as long as the patient is
still considered a pediatric
CLARK’S RULE
For infants and children below (<) 2 years
FRIED’S RULE
May be a more realistic way of relating dose as it considers
the body surface area to the dose
SQUARE AREA METHOD
computed using the height
and weight, or estimated using Pediatric Nomogram
Body Surface Area
The doses provided in the package insert are typically
the usual or __________ doses unless stated otherwise
adult
Standard neonatal intensive care (NICU) reference
NEOFAX
Foremost drug and nutritional reference manual to aid in
the treatment of neonates

Specialized IV tubing is used for a premature baby, and
syringe pumps containing less than ________ mL volume are
employed
