What needle do you use for drawing up drugs from and ampule?
Blunt filter needle or 23G needle to prevent glass particle contamination
Prior to administration of any drug what do you check?
Patient is not allergic
That it’s the correct drug
Check dosage
Check the packaging & concentration
Check package is intact
Check fluid clarity
Check expiry date
Common nebuliser drugs used for COPD, asthma, allergy, anaphylaxis or smoke inhalation?
Salbutamol and ipratropium
What needle do you use for IM drug administration?
21G
When administering drugs via IM what must you check for before injection?
Pull back on the plunger slightly to ensure there is no blood draw as this indicates you are in a blood vessel. If this occurs, discard syringe and needle and start again
How quickly do you inject drugs via IM?
10 secs per 1ml
How long do you wait to remove needle after IM injection?
10 secs
How much extra should you draw into the syringe if you are using an MAD?
0.1ml additional to account for the dead space in the device
