Immersion syndrome

A

Syncope following cardiac dysthymias following sudden exposure to water less then 5C degrees
-Caused by either a gal stimulation (Asystole) or by v-fib second to qt elongation form catecholamine dump

A

Severe laryngospasms causes hypoxia, convulsions, and death in the absence of active aspiration

Is there a difference between salt and fresh water drowning?

A

Not really, aspiration of 1-3mls/kgs or either salt or fresh water washes away pulmonary surfactant leading to alveoli collapse, atelectasis, ARDS and profound hypoxia
