Epilepsy (first seizure)
Stop driving
Inform the DVLA
No structural deformities and no epileptiform activity on EEG:
6 months
Above conditions not met:
12 months
Established epilepsy/multiple unprovoked seizures
If seizure free for a year can qualify for a driving license
If seizure free for 5 years often a til 70 license is issued
Withdrawal of AEDs
No driving whilst being withdrawn or for 6months post last dose
Simple faint
No restriction
1 episode of syncope (explained and treated)
4 weeks off
Single episodes of syncope unexplained
6 months off
2 or more episodes of syncope
12 months off
Stroke/TIA
1 month off
If no residual neurology don’t need to tell DVLA
Multiple TIAs in quick succession
Tell DVLA
3 months off
Craniotomy
1 year off
(unless for benign tumour and no seizures after then only 6 months)
Pituitary tumour
Craniotomy: 6 months
Trans-sphenoidal: striaght away if no impairment
Narcolepsy/cataplexy
case by case
Chronic neuro conditions (MS, MND etc)
inform DVLA and complete PK1 form
Elective angioplasty
1 week
CABG
4 weeks
ACS
4 weeks
1 week if successfully treated with angio
Pacemaker insertion
1 week
ICD insertion
if for ventricular arrhythmia 6 months off
Prophylactically 1 month (permaban if youre a group 2 driver)
Catheter ablation
2 days
Heart transplant
6 weeks - dont tell DVLA
AAA >6.0cm
Tell DVLA can drive if being monitored
IF >6.5cm no driving
Blepharospasm
Needs consultant opinion
Visual field defects
Cease driving
May be able to if remaining vision meets recommended national guidelines for visual fields
Mono-ocular visual loss
Inform DVLA
If acuity and fields normal in remaining eye may drive
