Driving Flashcards
What’s the max time allowed for air pressure to build after starting?
60 seconds
When do you add fluid to your engine?
When the fluid level is below the “add” mark
At idle the pump discharge should be approx?
50 psi
How much does stopping distance increase on slippery roads?
3-15 times
What do you do if vehicle starts to skid?
Ease off the gas, steer slightly into the skid, look where you want the vehicle to go.
Does the jake break affect ABS system?
No. The abs system will turn the jake break off whenever traction is lost and will reactivate it when abs system is turned off.
Jake break procedure in slippery conditions
Start with it off, use normal engine breaking, if no loss of traction turn jake break on to the low setting, if slippage occurs turn it off immediately
Can you use jake break in medium or high during slippery conditions?
Yes on medium but not recommended on high
When do you use a transmission retarder when slippery?
Never
On type 3 engines, less than ______mph is required to engage front axle.
10
Two things are required to shift the transfer case on type 3
Transmission in neutral, and parking break set
How is percent of slope measured?
Rise divided by run
How is degree of slope measured?
It is roughly half of the percent of slope
What is the max slope percentage you can drive up or down?
35-40%. Angle greater than 40% raises the front end and compresses the back end
To maintain rolling friction, how long do you break firmly for?
3-5 seconds. I you have to longer your going to fast.
Max slope degrees drive able on a side hill?
25 degrees
Four concepts of getting unstuck
Lighter by dumping water. Bigger footprint by airing down. Better traction by using dun age. Digging runways
Before entering roadway after off road, what do you check?
Tires, undercarriage, 4 wheel drive, compartments
Which way do you turn wheels when parking uphill and downhill?
Headed uphill-away from the curb.
Downhill-toward the curb.
Roll slowly until the wheel touches the curb then set the brake
When blocking what is taken into consideration when deciding which way to block?
Type of incident and the direction you want to divert traffic
On a vehicle accident what is the safest way to block?
Block left to protect crews working from extrication and medical compartments.
On a vehicle fire what is the safest way to block?
Block right to protect the engineer at the p
If neither vehicle accident or vehicle fire which way do you block?
Block in the direction you want to divert traffic
