Drivers Training Flashcards
Five primary vehicle systems that impact ability to safety control the apparatus
Tires
Wheels
Steering
Suspension
Brakes
Steering system
Steering wheel
Steering shaft
Steering box
Steering output shaft
Pitman arm
Drag link
Steering arm
No more than how much play in drag link
Less than 1/8 inch play vertically and horizontally
Gvwr vs curb
Gvwr- curb plus equipment, cargo, passengers
Curb- components without cargo or passengers
Gap between S buffer and spring and oos
1/16-1/2 inch.
Less that 1/16 inch or rubber axle stop touching = defect
Greater than 1/12 inch OOS
Pierce disc brake rear axle replacement
1/8th inch (3 mm)
OOS brake rotor
Cracked rotor
Heat checks greater than 1/8inch deep
Extend greater than 3/4 inch accross face of rotor
Oos drums
Breaks through drum
Crack expand when brake applied
Heat checks greater than 1/2 width
Heat checks greater than 1/8th inch deep
Air brake test
Release Peking brake let settle 1 min
More 3 psi loss or 4 for tillers
Apply steady pressure to brakes 1 min
No more 3,4 psi loss
Press release brakes- low air alarm 60-90 psi parking break pop at 20
Start motor at 1200 rpm’s
Pressure increase 50-90 psi in less than 3 mins
Pressure not exceed 135 psi
Place vehicle in D or R, P brake must restrain from movement
Engage parking brake and return to N
COLA
C cut in by 95. Below 80 oos
O cut out. 120-135. Above 135 is oos
L low air and audible alarm 60-90. If alarms don’t engage by 60= OOS
A air leakage. 3 psi engines 4 psi tillers
Drums at what temp are subject to brake fade?
800-1000 degrees
Axillary brakes
Jacobs brake
Telma driveline retarder
Allison transmission retarder
Jake brake
Integrated into motor cylinders, uses motor to absorb energy
Engages when accelerator release
Disengages when accelerator depressed or RPM below 1000
Telma 4 stages
Stage 1 and 2- release accelerator
Stage 3- depress brake lightly
Stage 4- depress brake hard
Transmission retarder
Vaned flywheel in transmission
Oil directed into flywheel to slow transmission
2 operator interventions with DEF
Active regen
Filling def tank
Def regen light solid vs flashing vs flashing with check engine
Passive is needed vs more urgent need vs immediate active regen required
Def regen light with thermometer indicates
High exhaust temp. No need for service. Regen created high exhaust temp
Speed for passive regen
40 mph
Manual (active, parked) regen
Remain in service. Hit manual regen switch. Revs up to1100 rpm. Remain with vehicle. 5-20 mins.
Cancels if break pedal depressed. “Regen inhibit” button pressed
Clearance of 5 ft from exhaust required
Freezing point of def
12 degrees
Never engage differential lock when
Greater than 25 mph or wheels spinning
What is required to complete defect report?
Mileage
Engine hours
Pump hours
Generator hours
How much of tires surface is in contact with road at any time?
10%
Which brakes lock first?
Front before rear to prevent spin out
Once vehicle swings more than ___ degrees, steering correction will not be effective
25 degrees
Entering intersection occurs when front bumper crosses
Into cross-traffic
Human eye takes __ seconds to recover from being blinded by bright light
7 seconds
Cone spacing
Less than 45 mph
Greater than 45
Greater than 45 20 ft
Less than 45 40 ft
Weight distribution front rear axle
1/3 front
2/3 rear
Minimum recommended tread depth emergency vehicles
4/32 inches
Check slack adjusters for movement no more than ___
1 inch
Due regard
Reasonably careful
Gross negligence
Reckless disregard
Willful and wanton
Intentional with careless indifference
Spotter should be how far from tailboard?
10-20 ft
What is intersection?
Anywhere that other vehicle may cross your path
Uncontrolled intersection
Does not have control device (stop sign, yield sign, traffic signal, railroad gate)
Change siren cadence no less than ___ ft from intersection
200
Safe following distance accounts for
Perception time, reaction time, brake time
4 second rule
Follow 4 seconds at 40 mph plus 1 second per 10 mph over. Add 1 second more per 10 mph in ADVERSE WEATHER
What hand position on steering wheel allows maximal directional control?
9 and 3
4 skids
Braking, power, cornering, hydroplane
Oxygen limit
19.5-23.5
How much o2 must be present for accurate LEL readings?
At least 10%
H2s alarm
10 ppm
Combustible gas and O2 sensors display in terms of ____. Toxi sensors display in terms of ___
Combustible-percent
Toxic-Ppm
Co sensors have cross sensitivity to what?
H and ENE’s (acetylene, ethylene)
Lel ___ work with extreme caution
10-25%
LEL greater than ___ withdraw immediately
25%
