Driver Terms Flashcards
Log
A log is where a driver records which of the four duty statuses they stay in throughout the 24 hours. The 4 duty statuses are: On Duty, Driving, Sleeper Berth, Off Duty
Log Form
Includes all the information that a driver must include in their “Log Graph” according to the DOT
Sleeper Berth
When the driver is not working, but spending time in the trucks living quarters. Related HOS Rules: 1) Sleeper berth extension 2) split sleeper berth
Personal Conveyance
If the driver is driving to their house
Yard Move
Manual driver status used to track IN-YARD driving time, occurs when the vehicle is moved around the yard or terminal.
Personal Use Policy
Companies often times will assign a vehicle the employee can take home overnight. The policy is in place between that employee and the company is typically for work use only. Any other activity is prohibited.
Slip-Seating
Slip seating is when multiple drivers operate the same vehicle in the same day (team drivers; co drivers)
Co-Driver
Occasionally, two drivers will form “team drivers,” meaning they drive the same truck together, switching back and forth between the role of driver and passenger. Each driver is required to include their co-drive on the “Log Form.” HOS rules and compliance are not affected by the addition of a co-driver.
Side Jobs
Jobs done by crews during or after work hours, with company equipment, without company knowledge, taking away from the company’s income
Fuel Card Abuse
Using a company fuel card to fill up any vehicle other than the one the card is assigned to
Fuel Abuse or Misuse
When the fuel in the company vehicle is paid for by the company but the employee uses the vehicle for non work related activities
DVIR
A Driver Vehicle Inspection Report needs to be completed daily by drivers for any commercial vehicle they operate. DVIRs can be completed electronically using a smartphone or tablet with features that force drivers to physically inspect the vehicle rather than just ‘pencil whipping’ the form.
