Drive - neural control Flashcards
Where do the neurones that control breathing primarily reside?
Medulla oblongata
What are the 2 main anatomical components of the medullary respiratory centre?
The dorsal respiratory group
The ventral respiratory group
What is the role of the dorsal respiratory group?
activate the contraction of the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles.
What is the role of the ventral respiratory group?
Set the basal respiratory rate
Activate the contraction of the internal intercostal muscles (and abdominal muscles)
Where is the apneustic centre located?
The lower pons
What is the role of the apneustic centre?
Fine-tuning the output of inspiratory neurons
and inhibiting expiration
Where is the pneumotaxic centre?
The upper pons
What is the role of the pneumotaxic centre?
Smooth transition between inspiration and expiration
inhibiting inspiratory neurones
