Drive Axle Arrangement Flashcards
When does torque reaction occur?
Tractor body lifts and rotates around the wheel in opposite direction of drive
What are the 5 types of drive axle arrangements?
De-Dion type Torque tube Hotchkiss open type Four link (semi hotchkiss) Front wheel drive
How are the springs connected on the de-Dion
By fixed pivots and swinging shackles
How is the final drive connected to the de-Dion
Secured to the vehicle frame
How is torque absorbed on the de-Dion?
The frame
What is fitted to the torque tube drive which strengthens the rear of the tube?
Bracing rods
How is tube attached to the gear box on the torque tube?
Ball and socket joint- including a universal joint to allow for angular deflections
Why can softer springs be used on the torque tube drive?
Relieve all the suspension other than it’s intended purpose
How is torque reaction resisted on the hotchkiss open type?
By U Bolts, then transmitted through the U bolt to the leaf spring
What dampens driving shocks on the hotchkiss type?
Spring movement
What is the four link system used in conjunction with?
Helical springs and live rear axle
What is used on the four link semi hotchkiss to transmit thrust and prevent rotation ?
Upper and lower suspension arms
What is the purpose of the panhard rod in the semi hotchkiss?
Stablizer, facilitate movement of the suspension
What is the advantages of the FWD transaxle?
Compact construction, good traction, reduces bonnet length, good steering stability
