Clutch Flashcards
What is the purpose of the clutch?
Assists in transmitting drive of the engine to the road wheels smoothly
What are the benefits of a clutch?
Disconnects power produced by the engine
Progressively connects power , reducing wear
What are the 3 basic types of clutches
Dog clutch
Friction cone clutch
Basic friction plate clutch
What is the function of the flywheel?
Absorbs kinetic energy during idle strokes
Reduces vibration
Transits start motor
Mounting surface for the clutch
What is the purpose of the spigot bearing?
Supports the end of the gearbox input shaft
Allows a differential of speed between crankshaft and gearbox input
Allowing the input to slow down when clutch is operated even though engine is running
What are the 2 types of spigot bearings?
Ball type bearing
Phosphor bronze type
What are the characteristics of the ball type bearing?
Heavy duty Interference fit Ball type bearing Floating Sealed for life
What are the characteristics of the phosphor bronze type?
Light-medium duty
Interference fit
Solid bush
Self lubricating
What does the friction plate do?
Transmit drive from flywheel to gearbox
How is buckling overcome on the driven plates?
Outer hub is slotted to allow flexing action
What is the wavey profile called on the friction plate?
Borglite crimping
This minimises clutch drag and helps spring apart the clutch
What does the crimping effect do?
Allows smoother engagement of drive of drive
Increases airflow so enhances cooling ability
What does the inner hub do?
Sandwiched between plates in the outer hub
Transmit drive to gear box input
Splines allow movement of the centre of f the plate along the input shaft
What is the purpose of the damper springs?
Transmit drive
Absorb shocks during drive engagement, from engine vibrations and overrun
What are the 2 purposes of the pressure plate?
Provide a flat driving face that mates with friction plate
Provide clamping force on to the friction plate to transmit drive
