What indicates the position of the tool?
There are 3 white lines on the OD of the tool body that the indicator cap rides up and down over. Bottom line is fully locked, middle line is unlocked from housing, and top line is drill ahead mode.
How many turns to operate the tool?
5 turns total. First 2 left hand turns locks the mandrel into the tool, and then 3 more left hand turns locks the tool into the conductor housing.
What is the load capacity of the tool?
1,000,000 lbs
What makes the locking dogs extend and retract?
The inner sleeve has a cam tapered profile on the OD that interfaces with the locking dog profile
What keeps the inner mandrel locked to the tool?
8 mandrel locking lugs
What threads are on the connections?
6 5/8” REG box/pin
What are the flow-by ports for?
Six 3” ports left open for jetting and closed for cementing. They vent air and drilling returns. 42.4 inches squared
What is the purpose of the anti-rotation keys?
They keep the tool from spinning while it is being functioned
What is the purpose of the external O-Ring?
Seals the tool in the housing and holds back pressure for cementing. Also a trash seal
What is the stop lug and when should it be installed and removed?
It stops the mandrel from turning. It is installed for shipping and removed for running.
What is the purpose of the sinter filter?
To vent the locking dogs and keep them from getting hydro/vacuum locked
What is meant by timing a drill ahead tool and how is it done?
Timing is done to ensure proper orientation and functionality. You function the tool to the left until the top of the stop shoulder is flush with the groove on the orientation ring, then you adjust the upper cap to have the stop shoulder slightly to the right of the stop key on the orientation ring.
