18 3/4" CAM Tool - Wellhead Housing Running Tool Flashcards
Are there any visual indications on this tool?
The piston has a white line on it’s OD which can verify the tool is locked
Explain the function and components in detail.
It is used to run/retrieve the high pressure wellhead and nominal bore protector as well as for testing of BOP’s to 15k. It is also used along with the rigid lock setting tool to set, test, and retrieve the rigid lock seal assembly. It functions with 3 1/2 turns, left to lock and right to unlock. As it is locked the piston travels downwards closing off the flow-by area.
What is the load capacity of the tool
DP-18-3540 - 6 5/8” REG box/4 1/2” IF pin - capacity is 1,500,000 lbs
18-910-200 - 4 1/2” IF box/pin - capacity is 1,000,000 lbs
What makes locking dogs extend and retract and what holds them in?
Can taper interface on the mandrel. They are held in by O-Rings
List the location and purpose of the seals on the WHRT
OD of the body - Cup Seal w/ O-Ring and non extrusion rings - seals the bore of the wellhead for BOP testing.
OD of piston - polypak w/ pip seal - closes off flow-by area
OD O-Ring - seals between tool body and wellhead to contain cementing back pressure
Mandrel has 2 sets of O-Rings and non extrusion rings at the piston to contain pressure for BOP testing
Locking dogs have O-Rings to hold them in the tool
What must be installed in each of the ports in the piston and why?
Flow-by plugs and a check valve assembly are installed for BOP testing to close off the ports. A snorkel ball valve assembly can also be installed in place of one of the flow by plugs for venting
A 2” ball valve assembly purpose and use is?
It is left open to vent trapped air while lowering through the splash zone then closed.
What are the anti-rotation keys for?
To keep the tool from rotating while it is being functioned
What is the purpose of the lower bushing?
To reduce wear and tear on the tool body and mandrel. It is nickel aluminum zinc
What rig operations is WHRT used in?
- run/retrieve wellhead
- run/retrieve nominal bore protector
- testing BOP to 15k
- with RLST to run, set, test, and retrieve the RLSA
Where does the tool land out?
The bore protector landing shoulder at 1.06’
What do the locking dogs lock into?
The locking dog profile on the ID of the wellhead just below the VX gasket area
Discuss the shape of the locking dogs in detail.
They have a square face profile for more contact area. The ID is round and tapered to interface with the mandrel
What must be installed in the HPWH prior to running the tool?
The nominal bore protector
What must be used to land the tool in open water?
The landing ring is installed in place of the cup seal retainer to land the tool in the wellhead when the bore protector is not in place.
