Drainage basin processes Flashcards
What are the 6 drainage basin processes?
Interception, infiltration, overland flow, evaporation, throughflow and groundwater flow
What is interception?
precipitation intercepted by the trees and ground vegetation
What is infiltration?
The downward movement of water into the soil
What is overland flow?
precipitation reaching the ground flows over the surface until it reaches a river channel
What is evaporation?
water on tree leaves, vegetation or lying on the ground/in river channels can be evaporated back into the atmosphere
What is throughflow?
infiltrating water continues down slopes through the soil towards the river channel
What is groundwater flow?
some infiltrating water continues into pores and crack in the underlying rock and flows towards the river as groundwater
