Serif Font
Serif typeface have a small stroke attached to the ends of the letters
Sans serif Font
Sans Serif typeface means text without strokes to the end of letters

What is Justification
Justification refers to the alignment of text within a paragraph or block of text on a page.
4 types of justified text
- Left justified text
- Right justified text
- Centre justified text
- Fully justified text
Drop Capital
The first letter in an article or paragraph is enlarged or dropped below the line
What does a drop capital do?
To lead the readers eye to the start of a paragraph/section of text
Indented Text
Indented text is text that has been moved to the right or left of the margins
What does indented text do
It creates visual pause between the text and the surrounding content. Indented text is often used at the beginning of a paragraph to separate it from the preceding content.
Hanging Indent
A hanging indent is a type of indent where all lines of a paragraph are indented except the first line.
What does a hanging indent do
- used in lists and bullet points
- easy to read
- provides a clear structure
Pull quote
A pull quote is a small section of a magazine article, which is sampled and enlarged
Column Rule
A column rule is a line that sits in the gutter dividing columns of extended text.
What does a column rule do?
The column rule makes the main extended text easier to read as it separates both columns clearly
Reverse
Lighter text on a darker background
Effect of using reverse
Creates emphasis through the contrast of colour/value
Caption
A caption is text beneath an image or graphic that describes it.
Text wrap
Text wrap is where the extended text wraps around a picture or graphic
Flow text along a path
A text style where the designer can create a custom line and the text will lie on it
Effect of using text wrap around images
The proximity of both features creates a link and therefore unity between them
Colour Fill
Colour fill allows a designer to fill an object with a colour. This can be a solid colour or transparent variant
Header
A space or margin at the top of the page that could be blank or contain a piece of information
Footer
A space or margin at the bottom of the page that could be blank or contain a piece of information
Margin
A blank area around the outside of a document. Could be at the left, right, top or bottom
Gutter
A gap vertically between columns or graphics
Benefits of using layers
- layers help you to organise your layout.
- You can edit layers separately
- You can turn off individual layers for clarity
Colour Picker
Tool that allows you to use the exact same colour in different areas of your page
Script Typeface
Script typefaces are influenced by handwriting and calligraphy. Script fonts are often formal and decorated with flourishes.

A Running Headline is a line of type appearing
consistently in the top margin of each page or
alternate left/right hand pages in printing
Full crop
A crop where the background of the image is fully removed
Square crop
Crop where the image is cropped in a set box
What is a drop shadow for
Drop shadows can be used to make images and text look more three-dimensional and give them a more professional and polished appearance. They can also be used to add visual interest and draw attention to specific elements in a design
