DP 13 - Transtheoretical model Flashcards
What is the transtheoretical model of behaviour change?
Explains how people intentionally change their problem behaviour to achieve a health-related goal
List the 5 stages:
- pre contemplation
- contemplation
-preparation - action
- maintenance
Pre-contemplation v contemplation
Pre-contemplation: not ready to change and have no intention of taking any action to change within next 6 months. They defend behaviour .
Contemplation: When a negative emotion comes from behaviour they move to contemplation. This is where they think about changing but are still ambivalent about taking action (pros/cons)
Preparation and action
Preparation:
having an intention and plan for change within next 30 days., may lack confidence but believe it’s necessary.
Action:
Makes visible attempts to change behaviour
Relapse vs Lapse
Relapse = full return to original behaviour
Lapse = slip up but quick return to action
Maintenance?
Sustained changed behaviour without relapse for 6 months or more.
A strength and a limitation?
Takes into account individual differences and complex or simple behaviours.
But lack of research into validity of time frames for stages/the order or stages
