Describe 2 advantages of a topical gel such as Doublebase, for dry skin.
- Can be used on macerated skin
* softens, moisturises and protects skin by trapping moisture
Which excipient is responsible to making this product into a gel formulation, and describe how this occurs?
- Carbomer, as it is a gelling/thickening agent
* This occurs through carbomer increasing the viscosity and form a gel
What is sorbitan laurate and why is it used in this product?
• Sorbitan laurate is non-ionic surfactant which is being used as an emulsifying agent in this product
Describe the function of glycerol in the product and its importance to the formulation.
• Glycerol is a humectant in this product which means it reduces the loss of water from the gel which would destabilise the formulation and cause it to dry out
When making a semi-solid extemporaneously it is normal to make an excess. Why is this and what amount of excess is normally sufficient?
• 5g because when using an evaporating basin, removing all of the product is not possible
When making semi-solds extemporaneously what additional safety label must be added to the dispensed label for this medicine, and why is this important?
