Double-Lumen Airways Flashcards
WHAT AM I?
I have two external openings, two lumens, two pilot balloons, two cuffs (yellow and white) & two black lines for depth indication
Placed while in neutral position
Combitube
Combitube ml of air in Proximal and Distal cuff
P. 85-100ml
D. 12-15ml
How many apertures does a combitube have?
8 ventilation apertures
Why would you ventilate through the blue longer tube?
Meaning that the distal tip is in the esophagus
leaving clear tube for gastric suctioning
Why would you ventilate through the clear shorter tube?
Meaning that the distal tip is in the trachea
leaving blue tube useless
Complications with Combitube
- Lacerations, perforation, esophageal trauma
- Wrong use of lumen = fatal
- Not used for IV access with meds
Contraindications for Combitube
- Not younger than 16yo
- Not shorter than 4ft
- Esophageal disease
- Ingestion of vomit
- Intact gag reflex & cough
Balloon cuff volume & pressure for King LT
45-90ml
60cmH2O
WHAT AM I?
I only have one ventilation port and one cuff pilot balloon that can inflate the two cuffs simultaneously
King LT
WHAT AM I?
I can be left in place for longer times in PACU
I am used in patients with upper airway abnormalities
I have a left-facing bevelled tip like the standard ETT
I am known to have an 8-10 cm endobronchial blocker
Univent
WHAT AM I?
I have two 15mm adapters, two inner lumens, two cuffs, two distal openings.
I am used to ventilate one or both lungs during during surgical procedures, I have an extra murphy’s eye to ventilate the RUL
I am useful when there is a unilateral lung disease, I can provide different ventilation strategy
Carlens
