Dot Point 4 - Sleep Deprivation / Sleep Recovery Flashcards
What are the 2 broad categories of sleep deprivation?
Total and partial deprivation
What is sleep deprivation?
Sleep deprivation means going without sleep and it falls into two broad categories.
Describe total sleep deprivation
Involves having no sleep at all
Describe partial sleep deprivation
Involves having less sleep than what is normally required
What are the effects of sleep deprivation?
Physiological, Cognitive, Affective and behavioural
Physiological - hand tremors, droopy eyelids, headaches
Cognitive - poor attention, memory problems. Poor concentration
Affective - highly emotional, irritable, feeling tired
Behavioural - clumsiness, increased risk taking, slowed performance
What happens when you have a loss of NREM sleep?
During NREM stage 3 and 4 growth hormones are released and this assists in the growth and repair of the body. A loss of NREM may prevent restoration of the body and its ability to replenish energy
What happens if you have a loss of REM sleep
REM is associated with consolidation of memories. Studies have shown that people deprived of REM become more aggressive and have difficulty concentration
What is sleep debt?
The accumulated amount of sleep loss from insufficient sleep
How much sleep is needed to recover from sleep debt?
One good night sleep usually depending on the amount of sleep deprivation, a few more nights of slightly longer sleep may be required
What is REM rebound?
REM rebound is when a person deprived of REM sleep will experience a greater proportion of REM when next allowed to sleep properly
What are micro sleeps?
After 3-4 days of sleep deprivation, people will engage in micro sleeps
They consist of brief (3-15secs)m involuntary period of sleep that occurs while a person appeared to be awake. EEG later s resembles stage 1/2 NREM sleep as alpha waves are experienced
