Briefly discuss the typical pattern of sleep
- REM sleep is increasing throughout the night
- NREM sleep is decreasing throughout the night
- A cycle of sleep is about 90 minutes
- We experience 4-5 cycles per night
- A typical cycle would look like
Stage 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, REM - REM is replacing stage 1 NREM in the first cycle
- Stage 3 and 4 NREM do not occur later in the night
