dose-reponse curves Flashcards
What are dose response curves good for?
Drug potency
Drug efficacy
Drug safety
What is the threshold?
The dose below which there are no biological effects from exposure to drug/chemical agent
What does a sharp slope suggest?
High potency but also possibly increased risk of toxic responses as dose increases
What does a flat slope suggest?
Poor efficacy and low potency
What is the steepness in the slope of the DR-curve quantified by?
Hill slope
What does a dose-response curve with a standard slope have a Hill slope of?
1.0
What do Hill slopes indicate?
The number of interacting sites
What are the main two types of antagonism?
Reversible competitive antagonism and irreversible competitive antagonism
What is the Schild plot?
Study the effects of agonist and antagonists on cellular responses caused y the receptor or ligand-receptor binding. Used to assess the potency of a reversible competitive antagonist
What can the Schild plot identify?
Can show if experiment was done wound as the system has not reached equilibrium. Can reveal if more than one type of receptor
