DOROTHEA OREM Flashcards
What is the theory of Dorothea Orem?
THEORY OF SELF-CARE DEFICIT
She indicated that no particular nursing leader directly influenced her work.
DOROTHEA OREM
Major concepts of self-care deficit theory
Theory of self-care
Theory of self-care deficit
Theory of nursing systems
practice of activities that an individual initiates and performs on his/her own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well being (the things u do)
SELF-CARE
“the ability for engaging in self-care”
SELF-CARE AGENCY
“totality of self-care actions to be performed for some duration in order to meet self-care requisites by using valid methods and related sets of operations and actions”
THERAPEUTIC SELF-CARE DEMAND
What are the self-care requisites?
- UNIVERSAL SELF-CARE REQUISITE
- DEVELOPMENTAL SELF-CARE REQUISITE
- HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE
Requisite which is common to all; activities of daily living.
UNIVERSAL SELF-CARE REQUISITE
-associated w/ developmental processes derived from a condition or associated with event.
-reaching a milestone or achievement for development ex. w/ honors, learning
DEVELOPMENTAL SELF-CARE REQUISITE
-required in conditions of illness, injury, disease
-ex. Avoiding things that will make us sick, seeking medical assistance.
HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE
-Specifies when nursing is needed
-When adult is incapable/limited/dependent
THEORY OF SELF-CARE DEFICIT
describes how the patient’s self-care needs will be met by both the patient and the nurse.
THEORY OF NURSING SYSTEMS
-applicable to those who are totally unable/bed-ridden
-nurse should be compensating for a patient’s total inability to engage in self-care activities.
WHOLLY COMPENSATORY SYSTEMS
-applicable to those who are slightly recovered (ex. can raise one arm fully.)
-both nurse and patient perform care measures.
PARTLY COMPENSATORY SYSTEMS
-applicable to patients who can fully sit or stand (fully recovered)
-Nurses give health teaching/orientation
