What are the main arguments against doping in sport
Fairness for competitors
harm cause to self and to other athletes - creates environment where people feel they need to dope. harms spectators - unrealistic expectations of what’s naturally achievable.
integrity. dehumanising and unnatural to dope.
Main ways that anti-doping is done
detection-deference. drug testing. this is expensive, can only be done to limited populations, has limited substances it can screen, and limited window where drugs would appear.
recent success have occurred through intelligence-led investigations relying on whistle-blowers
which sports see highest use
rugby, bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, boxing, athletics, cycling
which population groups use steroids the most
young men particularly sub-elite athletes, such as student athletes.
Reasons reported for doping
Perception of it being accepted, perfectionism, perception of talent, conformity to others doing it, ease of access, and influence of peers, coaches, organisations, online.
injury, time off, and transitional periods can also promote use.
Links between supplement use and doping
accidental contamination or counterfeits can lead to inadvertent doping.
doping is also more prevalent in people who are supplement users (3.5x). correlation not causation
reasons people do not partake in doping
health concerns, threat of drug testing, good self-esteem, low risk-taking tendencies, social pressure, personal morality, guilt, religion, self affirmation, etc…
