domestic division of labour Flashcards
Wilmott and Young : symmetrical family
-New Man
-new family emerging
-women now go out to work
-men help with the housework + childcare
-couples spend leisure time together
reason for the increase in symmetrical family
-geographical mobility( couples are moving away)
-new technology: hoover, washing machine
- changes in womens’ position : financial independence
WIlmott and Young 4 stages to family
1) Pre- Industrial family: unit of economic production
2) early industrial family : move to urban areas - men work, women do domestic work ——-> separate conjugal roles
3) symmetrical family : social mobility —> nuclear family
- technologies : washing machine
- men and women –> paid jobs—> joint conjugal roles
4) Assymetrical family : suggests men would spend leisure time away from men
–> stratified diffusion: would diffuse down the social class becomes a norm
feminists perspective on Wilmott and Young ( Anne Oakley)
Anne Oakley : rejects . did her own Qualitative research on how housework is shared, women still did majority of housework.
- women suffered from a dual burden of paid jobs + domestic labour.
feminists perspective (Duncombe + Marsden)
-> triple shift : paid work, domestic work+ emotional work
feminists perspective ( Caroline Gatrell)
40 ys after Anne Oakleys findings , women are still doing majority of domestic work whilst working in paid jobs
Economic + division of financial power (edgell)
Edgell: women had power in making descions –> groceries, clothes, home decor
: men –> decisions on moving ,holiday buying cars
Men had more say in decision making because they earned more money
Economic + division of financial power
(Pahl+ Volger)
1) Allowance system: men gave their wife allowance for meeting family needs, household cost and child needs
2) pooling: both partners have access to income and joint responsibility ( e.g joint bank account)
1994 Pahl found men still earned more
Domestic violence + power relations in the family ( Dobash and Dobash)
husband behave violently to their wives when felt their authority has been challenged
Domestic violence + power relations in the family (Dunne)
Researched lesbian couples: found : do not have to accord to traditional gender stereotypes
Domestic violence + power relations in the family ( Weeks)
-same sex couples make more symmetrical family than hetrosexual ones
Class + division of labour ( schor)
-Schor: Western World: ‘commercialisation of housework’
-products and services reduced time women spend on domestic duty
-only the wealthy could afford but the WC –> same burden as before
class+ division of labour ( Gershuny)
agreed with Edgell, Pahl + volger : economic factors weigh more in the division of labour than personal + societal value
- until women get paid equal to men+ untill glass ceiling completely disappeared —> men naturally have more say in the household.
