Dogs Flashcards
What is Coppinger’s theory of domestication?
Dogs chose domestication by coming closer to people to live, who threw food away. They had to hunt less and their brains got smaller. Teetch got smaller also.
How did current dogs get a variety of colors? Wolves do not have much color variation.
Experimentation in breeding; in Antartica, some people tried to tame foxes as pets. Noticed that the tamer foxes had less adrenalin, and other genetic traits began to come in and change also, had higher variation of colors, for example.
One UCLA study was discussed where 6000 yr old dog DNA was compared to current dog DNA. What was concluded?
That dog domestication, at least genetic changes-wise, must have begun about 100K years ago.
Humans contributed to dog evolution by doing what?
Breeding dogs with more of the characteristics they wanted in a dog, (color, bevavior etc).
What is regulatory DNA?
allows some characteristics to change without changing basic dog DNA.
What is the critical period of socialization for dogs vs wolves, and how is it part of domestication?
This is the period where they are able to learn what they need to know for survival. This age for dogs is 16 weeks, and for wolves it is 3 weeks. It has lengthened because they no longer have to know these things to hunt their own meals.
How long ago did dogs probably start being domesticated?
10,000 years
What are the steps to wolf hunting, and where do domesticated dogs stop?
search, eye stalk, close in, chase, grab bite, kill bite. Domestic dogs stop after chase, because they do not need to kill their own food. Once the kill bite starts, it has to continue til the prey is killed.
