Q

What is the difference between the Radio Station License and the Radio Operator’s License?

A

The radio station license allows the aircraft to act as a radio station, transmitting on the FM wavelength. The radio license allows the holder to legally operate the radio, is valid for life.

14
Q

Why is it important to have the POH on board the aircraft?

A

The POH (Pilot Operating Handbook) has all pertinent information for the aircraft, allows the pilot to research any information that might be needed while operating the aircraft.

15
Q

How does the weight and balance info in the POH and the weight and balance reports for particular aircraft differ?

A

The weight and balance in the POH is a generic example for aircraft type, whereas the weight and balance report is specific to each aircraft of that type.

21
Q

How will an aft Center of Gravity affect the aircraft?

A

Improve cruise performance but present more dangerous stall characteristics. The elevator acts opposite the force of lift to balance the inbuilt forward center of gravity of the aircraft, moving the center of gravity rearward quires less down force from the elevator.

22
Q

Will the Stall speed be higher or lower than normal with a more aft Center of Gravity?

A

Stall speed reduced with a more aft Center of Gravity but stall characteristics are more dangerous

23
Q

Will the Stall speed be higher or lower than normal with a forward Center of Gravity?

A

Stall speed increased with a forward Center of Gravity.

24
Q

How do you determine the Moment?

A

Moment = Weight * Arm

25
Q

How often does an aircraft have to be re-weighted?

A

If there is any equipment change the aircraft must be re-weighted.

26
Q

Does the Journey Log have to be carried on board for every flight?

A

Yes.

27
Q

What is the difference between Flight Time and Air Time?

A

Flight Time is when the wheels start moving to when they stop, Air Time is wheels up to wheels down.

28
Q

Are aircraft inspections based on Flight Time or Air Time?

A

Aircraft inspections are based on Air Time.

29
Q

If there is a snag in the Journey Log can you legally fly?

A

No, unless snag is signed off by AME.

30
Q

If inspection was due at 1050 hours can you fly beyond that time?

A

No, unless an AME has given written confirmation of a 10 hour extension in the journey log. Once the 10 hour extension has been met the aircraft absolutely cannot fly.

31
Q

What type of maintenance inspection schedule is the aircraft on?

A

Most aircraft require inspections every 100 hours of air time, Cessnas are often on the progressive care maintenance program where inspections are completed at 50 hour intervals with a complete inspection of the aircraft every 200 hours.

32
Q

When is your aircraft’s next inspection due?

A

Check the Journey Log book.

33
Q

How often must the compass be swung?

A

Compass must be swung annually.

34
Q

When do you require an ELT?

A

An ELT is required on board at all times unless the aircraft is operated within 25 nautical miles of departure aerodrome.

35
Q

How often must the ELT be certified?

A

ELT must be certified annually.

36
Q

At what times an you check to see if the ELT is operational?

A

ELT can be checked within the first 5 minutes of each hour.

37
Q

What should be checked in the Journey Log to verify it’s airworthy?

A
  • If maintenance inspections have been done
  • When the compass was last swung
  • ELT certification date
  • Remarks section to check for defects, snags and AME comments
  • The pitot static system has been certified (must be done every 2 years)
38
Q

How must an error in the Journey Log be corrected?

A

With a single line through them.

39
Q

How many minutes does 0.1 equal?

A

0.1 hours = 6 minutes.

40
Q

What are the four sections of the Technical log book? May it be carried on board the aircraft?

A
  • Airframe book
  • Propeller book
  • Engine book
  • Aircraft modifications and directives

Maintenance done to the aircraft is logged in both the Technical log book and the Journey log book.

41
Q

Before departing on a cross-country flight what should be checked in the Journey log book?

A

The Journey log book should be checked to verify the aircraft is airworthy, close attention should be given to the time remaining so that the cross-country flight does not exceed the time remaining.

42
Q

What are the minimum instrumentation required for day VFR flight?

A
M - Manifold/Tachometer
O - Oil Temperature Gauge
O - Oil Pressure Gauge
F - Fuel Gauge
A - Airspeed Indicator
C - Compass
T - Timepiece
A - Altimeter
R - Radio (VHF, Transponder, ELT)
43
Q

What documents must any flight crew have with them when piloting an aircraft?

A
  • Valid medical
  • License or Permit
  • Radio Operator’s License
44
Q

How long is a Class III medical valid for?

A

Valid 5 years up to 40 years age, over 40, valid for 2 year.

45
Q

When does your medical expire?

A

The medical expires on the first day of the month.

46
Q

Does proof of insurance have to be on board for every flight?

A

Yes.

47
Q

What is the difference between a snag and a defect?

A

A snag is an issue with a part of the aircraft that is listed as required in the POH equipment list, a defect is an issue with a part that is not listed as required in the POH equipment list.

48
Q

When using a cross-wind grid, what is the order of operations to determine crosswind and headwind?

A
  • Determine angle between runway magnetic heading and wind direction magnetic heading
  • Follow the wind speed arc that corresponds to reported wind speed and intersect with heading line
  • X axis from this point determines cross wind speed, Y axis the head wind component
49
Q

How does a progressive car maintenance cycle work?

A

Inspections are at set times and there is a + or - 10 hour window on these set times.

50
Q

What would invalidate the Certificate of Registration?

A
D - Destroyed
E - Exported
A - Address change
D - Decommissioned
S - Sold
51
Q

How many mechanics must sign off on maintenance work?

A

2.

52
Q

If you notice a snag or defect before your flight should you note it?

A

Yes, if a defect you can have it deferred.
