Doctrine of Scripture Flashcards

Q

Sufficiency of Scripture

A

The Scriptures contain everything we need for knowledge of salvation and godly living. We don’t need any new revelation from heaven.

“Scripture is clear enough to make us responsible for carrying out our present responsibilities to God.” -Frame

“There are no words of God spoken to us at all today except the words of Scriptures. - Packer

Q

Doctrine of Scripture

A

God’s word is understandable, necessary, enough, final.

2 Peter 1:16-21 “And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Q

Necessity of Scripture

A

General revelation is not enough to save us. We cannot know God savingly by means of personal experience and human reason. We need God’s word to tell us how to live, who Christ is, and how to be saved.

Q

Clarity of Scripture

A

The saving message of Jesus Christ is plainly taught in the Scriptures and can be understood by all who have ears to hear it. We don’t need an official magisterium to tell us what the Bible means.

WCF: “All things in Scripture as not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all: yet those things which are necessary to be known believed, and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded, and open in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use or the ordinary means, may attain unto a sufficient understanding of them.

Verse for Sufficiency of Scripture

A

Hebrews 1:1-4 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoken to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Verse for Clarity of Scripture

A

Deuteronomy 30:11-14 “For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off … but the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in in your heart, so that you can do it.”
Psalm 119 Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path.

Q

Special and Generation Revelation

A

We know God by two means:

1) By creation, preservation, and government of the universe, since the universe is before our eyes like a beautiful book in which all creatures, great and small, are as letters to make us ponder the invisible things of God; his eternal power and his divinity, as apostle Paul says in Romans 1:20. All these things are enough to convict men and to leave them without excuse.
2) He makes himself known to us more openly by his holy divine Word, as much as we need in this life, for his glory and for the salvation of his own.

Q

(Final) Authority of Scripture

A

The last word always goes to the word of God. We must never allow the teachings of science, of human experience, or of church councils to take precedence over Scripture.

Verses for Inerrancy

A

Prov. 30:5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Matt 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Ps 119:160 states that “the sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”

Psalm 19:7-8 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

Matt 5:17-18
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
