Doctrine # 9 Flashcards
Apostasy
A falling away, a withdrawal, a defection. To turn one’s backs, to reject
Doctrine # 9
We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ
Verses that prove we can lose our salvations
John 15:5 1 Corinthians 10: 6-13 Hebrews 2:1-3 Hebrews 6:4-6 Hebrews 10:26-29 Revelation 2:4-5, 3:1-6, 14-22
Backsliding
The experience in which a soul has entirely departed from God and lost all spiritual life; and the process by which this state is reached
Is often secret at first, known only to the soul itself; later it becomes open, being seen in the outward life
An expression of unresponsiveness or opposition to the will of God the attitude of the heart, which accompanies and follows sinful action
The cause of backsliding
Decline of faith
Reversal of conduct
Example: Galatians 1:6-7
Results of backsliding
Injures the cause of Christ as well as the spiritual life of the backslider
Does not diminish the greatness of the gospel-the backslider is still eligible for redemption
Predestination
Belief that God has already determined who will be saved
Election
Have been chosen by God
TULIP-Calvinism
T-total depravity U-unconditional election L-Limited atonement I-irresistible grace P-perseverance of the Saints
Total depravity
Human beings are so affected by negative consequences of Original Sin that they are incapable of being righteous and are always and unchangeably sinful; human freedom is totally enslaved by sin so we can only choose evil
Unconditional election
Since human beings cannot for choose themselves, God has by his eternal decree chosen or elected some to be counted as righteous, without any conditions being placed on that election
Limited atonement
The atonement of Christ, which was to be the basis for salvation, needed only to include those whom God had already chosen to save. All others,Therefore, would be excluded.
Irresistible grace
But since God has chosen to save certain ones, he would call them to salvation in such a way that they would be unable to resist his call
Perseverance of the saints
Finally, and very logically, those who were thus called and Saved would be unable to ever fall away and be lost -once saved always saved
Sovereignty of God
Absolute right to do all things to his own good pleasure
Calvinist believes in total sovereignty of God. In that man has absolutely no responsibility when it comes to being saved and keeping saved
