Doctrine 7 and 8 Flashcards
Recite Doctrine 7
We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
Recite Doctrine 8
We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
What is regeneration (define)?
“Literally ‘re-birth’ the renewal by the Holy Spirit which comes with the acceptance of Christ.”
Brief explanation of regeneration.
“The essence of justification by faith is that we are accepted by God…our faith in Christ’s Atonement leads to forgiveness and hope…
our relationship with God brings to life new desires for inward purity and love for others. These desires are signs of the experience of new life, the spiritual transformation that we call regeneration.
(HD, Pg. 147)
Salvation is more than personal freedom it is also___________.
a right relationship in Community.
What is Justification?
God’s act of declaring people to be righteous before him, accepting them despite their past sins.
Although we are sinners, God declares us righteous because of our faith in Jesus Christ. (Romans 3:22)
We are accepted by God as we are.
We do not deserve…earn…or can repay it. We can
only experience the joy of forgiveness and
reconciliation with God.
(HD, Pg. 163)
We are treated like one who has the right to the Father’s fellowship and esteem.
What is grace?
the persistent, loving favor of God towards undeserving humanity.
Justification by grace
God seeks us before we even desire to seek him. His grace is totally unmerited (Hosea 11:3-4, 8-9) this is a characteristic of God’s dealing with us at all times, seen supremely in Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:4). It awakens us, convicts us of sin, convinces us of hope, enables us to respond and leads us to new life.”
Repentance relating to justification and grace
, we cannot presume upon God’s forgiveness. He does not provide an automatic pardon for unrepentant sinners. It is by his grace that we are awakened to our need of salvation, and the necessary response is our repentance.” (HD, Pg. 165)
Justification by faith
Faith is our personal response to the grace of God…Though faith in Christ requires the use of our minds, it is possible to assent to a creed without trusting the Savior. Justifying faith involves heart, mind and will, and is made possible by God himself who bestows faith on those who desire it
Sanctification
according to Wesley, is the process of change in a believer’s life from sinfulness unto holiness. It is also the process of becoming “more dead to sin” while we become “more and more alive to God.”
Imputation
Christ’s righteousness is imputed means that ‘all believers are forgiven and accepted, not for the sake of anything in them, or of anything that ever was, that is, or ever can be done by them, but wholly and soley for the sake of what Christ hath done and suffered for them’
Christ’s righteousness in imputed to us when we believe so that ‘faith and righteousness are inseparable.”
Christ’s righteousness in imputed to us. It is not through anything that we personally do but strictly an act of love that gives believers forgiveness and acceptance.
righteousness given
Impartation
imparted righteousness” to identify the righteous principle imparted by God to believers when He regenerates them. Believers thereby become “partakers of the divine nature” (cf. 2 Peter 1:4). It is this principle of righteousness imparted to men in regeneration which is ever in conflict with the old Adamic nature.
the knowledge of righteousness…. “make known”
Explain “he that believeth hath the witness in himself”
We believe that God, who has accepted and saved us and given us eternal life, has given us also the assurance of our right relationship with him. The Holy Spirit is the seal and guarantee of our salvation and assures us of the truth of the gospel message and its effectiveness for us. Our new life, our determination to obey God, our break with the past and our new spiritual direction give evidence of our adoption into God’s family
Atonement as it relates to justification.
“If the transforming grace brought about by the Atonement is to save us, we must experience the power of the universal work of Christ on the Cross for ourselves. This comes about, not by understanding the doctrine, but by trusting in the God who saves.”
We would not have right relationship with God without atoning through Jesus Christ.
